Ingredients We Use
We work hard to track down ingredients that are kind to skin, and are responsibly produced, from local sources whenever possible. All the recipes for Brushwood Farm soaps have been developed on the farm, in order to produce a creamy lathering soap that is kind to your skin.
- Raw Goats' Milk
- This ingredient comes from a nearby grass-based dairy that is inspected by the state of PA for herd health and cleanliness.
- Lard
- Lard produces a creamy luxurious lather. Ours comes from a nearby family farm and market - never hydrogenated or preserved.
- Tallow
- Tallow makes a hard, white soap with tiny creamy bubbles. We render ours here on the farm from locally raised cattle
- Olive Oil
- High in Oleic fatty acid, one of the conditioning oils.
- Safflower Seed Oil
- One of the best sources of linoleic fatty acid, known for its conditioning properties. Expeller pressed without chemical solvents
- Organic Soybean Oil
- Another conditioning oil.
- Castor Oil
- Adds fluffy bubbles in soaps. Conditions in lip balms & helps provide a barrier against drying.
- Beeswax
- Our beehives are managed organically. We don’t use any miticides or other chemicals in our hives, so you don’t ever need to worry about residues in our beeswax.
- Honey
- From our hives here in the farm, honey is a humectant, which draws moisture, and boosts bubbles in the lather.
- Unrefined Shea Butter
- A rich thick butter, with vitamins, minerals, proteins and known for its moisturizing properties. The Shea butter we use is wildcrafted in Togo, West Africa, by a small company committed to fair trade and providing their workers with a living wage.
- Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
- Otherwise known as lye. Lye is necessary to turn the fatty acids in the oils into soap, via a chemical reaction known as saponification. Like the old saying says, "No lye, no soap, no lie."
